2018 Safe Place Selfie Day

It’s Safe Place Selfie Day! Join the fun by finding your safe place, taking a selfie, and sharing it on your social media platforms! Tag your photos with #SafePlaceSelfie. Finding your safe place and knowing it ahead of when you need it is an easy preparedness action you can take today!

For tornadoes, a common threat to Tuscaloosa County, remember to use a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of your home to seek shelter. Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible, and stay away from doors and windows. Cover your head – many tornado injuries and deaths occur from flying debris.

Consider some other things today while seeking out your safe places: what else could you put in your safe place to make it even safer (a NOAA weather radio or a preparedness kit)? What if you weren’t home, but traveling or at work? Do you know where your community storm shelters are along your route or what your business’ safety plan is? Get creative – think of non-weather scenarios or hazards that may require a safe place.

Encourage your friends, family, coworkers, and social media network to participate in Safe Place Selfie Day by posting their selfie with the hashtag #SafePlaceSelfie. Tag someone today and ask them, “Where is your safe place?”
